Feather Merchants

Founder/Owner of Feather Merchants Ltd: Dennis Black
Founder of UMPQUA Feather Merchants
--------------------------------------------------------------
Dennis Black founded Umpqua Feather Merchants in 1972, a fly fisherman from Oregon and full time fly tyer, who anticipated the growth of the fly fishing industry around the world. Dennis knew that demand would soon push flies and fly-tying out of the cottage-industry category. His goal was to satisfy that demand by setting up offshore fly-tying production facilities.
Dennis recognized early on that two of the keys to success would lie in encouraging innovative fly tyers to contribute new fly patterns to the company's list and using the BEST fly-tying materials available to produce the HIGHEST QUALITY FLIES...
So, Dennis instituted a unique royalty program for fly tyers, insuring that the originators of innovatative fly patterns could receive royalty payments, based on sales, for the use of their original patterns. Dennis signe on the likes of Dave Whitlock, Randall Kaufmann, John Barr, Lefty Kreh and many many more...Today there are over 100 royalty fly tyers that design and share their patters with the world...We also currently have 12 royalty tyers from New Zealand.
In sharing their patterns with the world and Feather Merchants, they have complete control of the quality of the flies that are produced...if they do not meet the tyers standards, they do not reach the market...So if you are buying your flies because they are tied by a certain tyer, make sure that they are the REAL thing...There are many immitations out there and there are many people cashing in on these tyers hard work...Please help us support them and the work they do...
All our current flies are tied in Chiang Mai, Thailand and they are only tied with the highest quality materials and Tiemco Hooks by the world's best fly tyers...We have a waiting list for workers in our factory and generations of families have also worked for us...Our factories are of the highest standards, having all the modern technologies to create a friendly work environment, so that our tyers enjoy their jobs and produce only the HIGHEST QUALITY flies for you to fish with...
With Feather Merchants Flies, you know you are only getting the BEST that the market has to offer...So if it does not say Feather Merchants or UMPQUA just be warned...

Chappie Chapman
|
As one of New Zealand 's best known fly fishing guides Chappie explains the passion that he has for fishing.
" I caught my first fish at age six. It was not a trout, but I discovered fly-fishing at thirteen. Where I grew up, there was a mountain, from whose graceful slopes flowed no fewer than three hundred streams, most of which held trout.
Some of those streams were small, and that's where I started to learn my craft. To this day my preferred fishing, is with a dry-fly in a small stream. In the mid 1970's I did something that was considered radical (at least in those days). I sold up and quit my job, brought a 4WD vehicle and a caravan, and went fishing for the next three and a half years. I guess if you do something for long enough, you are bound to get proficient at it sooner or later!
I have been guiding anglers for over twenty years, although that has not always been a full time job for me, as it is now. I spent a good number of years in the fishing tackle industry, both at wholesale and retail, during which, I have had the opportunity to be involved with design and development of some of the more popular brands of fly-fishing tackle on the market today.
In addition to fly fishing guiding, I run about twenty five, two day fly-fishing schools at introductory to mid level, and about five or six three day advanced level.
